Blackouts or brownouts can spell disaster in a production environment, especially for a server room. Not only such a mishap could hinder the overall performance and productivity but also a downtime like this can result in money lost. That’s why in this modern era, as power consumption skyrockets, we can’t turn our eyes from managing and protecting powerful tech devices.
Although technological mishaps can cost you in a number of ways, the biggest resource you’ll lose is machine time. One single blip can cost your hundreds of hours, not to mention the efforts you have to put to reschedule the shifts. In order to avoid such a situation, the best possible way is to employ a trusted UPS from a certified manufacturer.
And when it comes to UPS selection, there is no better device in the market than an Eaton 9PX 9PX8KIPM31 UPS. These are high-value devices that offer around 28% more wattage and let you connect more devices as compared to other traditional devices. Moreover, the efficiency and conversion rate of Eaton UPSs are far better than their counterparts.
In this article, we have reviewed the design and functionality of the new Eaton 9PX 9PX8KIPM31 UPS. If you are looking for a modern UPS to safeguard your equipment, continue to read.

Design & build
Like all Eaton 9PX UPS models, this one can also be set up in both tower and rack-mount configurations. For floor mounting or tower configuration, the package comes with two “feet” that keep its stability in case you want to put this UPS vertically. If you want to configure the unit horizontally, Eaton offers static mounting rails for rack-mount environments. There are 4-post racks that could help you set your Ups inside a lab by saving space.
Front layout
The front layout is simple and presents a look of high-quality speakers. There are two large vents on the right and left side that offer sufficient airflow. At a glance, this Eaton 9PX UPS looks like a simple piece of machinery and appears to be a part of your system.
On the contrary, the design assists you in case you want to take a peek on the inside system. You can easily hot-swapped the internal battery pack within minutes, eliminate any downtime, and yet the system would stay inside the production environment during normal maintenance.
Rear layout
The layout in the backside varies from model to model and offer varying configurations. However, this is to manage the multitude of electrical connectivity options and the higher-rated internal hardware. Although, the 9PX8K UPS is pre-wired to a terminal block for hardwired configuration, the rear side features a cord and connector for primary power input.
Input connectors are hardwired, while there are four power IEC 60320 C19 output connectors. All the connectors are protected by circuit-breakers on the UPS itself, while its plugs are sheltered by either the master circuit breaker upstream or circuit breakers on the device attached.
Operation Modes
This Eaton 9PX UPS comes with two distinctive modes: standard and high-efficiency, with each having its own purpose. The former i.e. Standard mode allows the 9PX UPS to flow output power through the batteries and on-board inverter. It is constantly online and keep critical power-sensitive equipment online by offering a 0ms transfer delay during power outages without a blip.
The high-efficiency mode, on the other hand, upsurges the efficiency of the battery backup from >93% to >98%. This is ideal for I/T equipment that can handle a 10ms transfer delay and thus delivers a more efficient backup to the system. The 9PX UPS operates in a bypass mode when it is in the high-efficiency mode and it only switches online when power fails, whereas the inverter power is kept down.
Intelligent Power Software
The Intelligent Power Software Suite offered by Eaton helps you manage and monitor the 9PX UPS remotely. This software suits include Intelligent Power Protector which performs tasks, such as shutting down a server safely if there is a power failure and is installed at the system level. Whereas, the Intelligent Power Manager assists you in monitoring the multiple devices across the network.
Additionally, you’ll get an edition of its Intelligent Power Manager that as a free download, supports for up to ten nodes. The IPM that Eaton offers is compatible with KVM, XenCenter, SCVMM, and ESXi technologies. This is a powerful IPM that can manage and monitor multiple ePDU and UPS devices via a XenCenter dashboard or vCenter or web browser across the network.
Furthermore, the safe shutdown of servers including vCenter clusters is ensured by the shutdown agent management of Intelligent Power Manager. You can also configure this software to trigger XenMotion, vMotion and other migration applications. This not only maximise the integrity and availability in case of a power disruption but also move virtual machines transparently to an available server on the network.
Verdict
Overall, Eaton 9PX 9PX8KIPM31 UPS is a high-achiever UPS for medium to high-density rack configurations that deliver enterprise-grade power protection. This UPS model is rated for 7.2kW or 8000VA and is perfectly ideal for servers operating in the lab and storage solutions. This Eaton 9PX UPS can assist your remote office or small business to ensure accessibility in case of a power breakout or brownout.
